Questions
What will the purpose of this wiki be? Things of interest only internally, a lab website like http://bioinfo.unc.edu/giddings, or a combination of both? I know it's in the "playing around" stage at this point, but I'm curious. Thanks. CWMaier
Hmm.... Just a thought, but I think it might be useful to put some more links in one of the side bars, or at least in one spot on the Wiki.... Maybe it is just me, but I seem to have trouble finding my way to the page I am looking for. The information I am looking for is on the Wiki, but I find myself looking all over the place to find it... Either scrolling through the Main page, or going through several other pages to get where I trying to go. Some examples might include:
- Lab Meeting Schedule:
- Link to the schedule of lab meetings... currently this page is under "current events..."
- Lab Projects:
- List of current lab projects... currently somewhere on the Wiki
- System setup stuff:
- Setting up the CVS environment variables and other stuff.... Also exists somewhere in the Wiki.
Just a thought. I am not sure if there exists a reason to not consolidate links of interests... Or if other people would find this useful. Maybe I just need to get used to the Wiki Layout. Jameson

Use of the Wiki
I think the Wiki can be used as both a lab web page for external people to visit and learn about us, and also for internal discussions/issues/policies. Mark is currently working on a way that will allow us to hide certain pages from the outside world, and to limit who can sign up for an account. Once we've done that, it seems we can use it for both purposes.
Any other thoughts? Giddings
Project-in-progress pages?
User:Srj: One possible type of (externally hidden) page could be "project in progress" page. One page per project or per person, with a short regular note about what is being worked on, problems being encountered, etc. This would make it easy for Morgan and others to keep up with what is going on, provide a sense of accomplishment when running through endless loops of system admin and setup (like I'm doing now with the FUGUE stuff), Let other people inside the detail of a project, provide a background and history, etc. I don't mean detail like an online lab notebook, just short comments. For example: PIP:Francisella-FUGUE
- I was thinking exactly along these lines. Not only to track project details, but also to discuss ideas. I frequently have ideas (of what merit they are, who knows), but I never remember to discuss them with people. I'd like to use the site to put up ideas and develop them. However, we don't want to give our competitors all our good ideas. Just the bad ones. So we'll leave the bad ideas public, just to slow them down (or, maybe we should post the good ideas and hide the bad ones, kind of like using reverse psychology) :) Morgan
- A fairly succesful honeypot or pot-of-gold strategy is to discuss the existance of an idea openly, but always point out that the details should be secret... except accidently leave a public link to the secret details. :) Stuart
Templates
I like using templates. If there was a template or two for the user pages, and maybe for events on the Current events page, it would be easier to fill in information. (User:Srj)
- I have made a template for Seminars of Interest (Template:Seminar Of Interest). Feel free to modify / extend as necessary (User:CWMaier). I added a 'desc' (description) field (markh)
Wiki tools
MarkH A GUI tool that interfaces better with styles, links and images is clearly a benefit here for everyone. Please place any suggested links below, and I'll see that they get evaluated, prioritized (for usefulness/price/portability/etc) and moved to our FAQs/Tips section -- or just put them there and amend this discussion
28 October update: I looked at a bunch of these and they all seem buggy and/or early-release, though I haven't yet tried them all. Anyone have any suggested sites?
Improper Use of UNC Seal
We need to replace the Seal as the site logo, with the Old Well at least.
